Earth Day Creative Corner

By: Julia Baranovsky

Earth Day is held on Saturday this year, April 22. The official theme is “Invest in Our Planet”. This time we wanted to showcase how we can invest in our planet and our surroundings.

Over the past year, we held many workshops at The Corner @ 240 that emphasize reusing existing materials to create something new and exciting that can be used to decorate our homes. Community members were shown how to create yarn from old T-shirts and use it for weaving, how to work with old magazines to create useful handcrafted items, and how to open their minds to see new opportunities in something that looks like garbage to others.

To inspire you to do the same, here are some examples of the things that were made in the community and new ideas to try in the future.

Baskets and cat bed made from t-shirt yarn
Rug made from old jeans using a crochet technique

A planter made from broken electrical cord and a body scrub jar
Coasters, cork board, and wall art made from wine corks
Halloween decorations made from old bed sheets
Bath rug made from t-shirt yarn
