St. James Town is a vibrant and growing community, and on the 9th of August the neigbourhood launched the City’s first Share and Reuse Hub, The Corner @240. Located at 240 Wellesley, the Share & Reuse Space aims to support a culture of reusing, sharing, repairing and repurposing items to prolong their life.

Funded by The City of Toronto, The Corner @ 240 and its initiatives build sustainable communities by:

  • educating residents about the importance of waste reduction and reuse
  • providing opportunities for sharing and repairing
  • offering skills training and creating job and economic opportunities
  • creating a space for community members to gather.

Borrowing Library

The Corner @ 240 will also feature a tool library, where residents can borrow equipment for a short time and return it. It is similar to a library but instead of borrowing books you can borrow tools, party supplies, games, etc. This initiative prevents items that can have a second life from needlessly ending up in a landfill. The Hub is a space to enhance public knowledge and ability to repurpose items for a second life.

What happens at the tool library will have an impact on reducing waste and keeping our environment green and healthy. The hub will provide the tools and resources needed to help residents develop and learn skills regarding repair and ‘do it yourself’ fixes. There will be classes and workshops running throughout the year to help residents learn these skills. Please drop by at the hub to borrow tools.

Fix – it Sessions

Fix-it Days happen every Monday at the Hub where resident volunteers help residents repair and fix broken items. Hence enabling residents to prolong the life of such items.
There are more discussions now with partners and local institutions that might be interested in such programs and will support residents to find their way into the job market by providing needed training mainly with the high demand jobs in Toronto.

If you enjoy repairing things and helping others learn how, we invite you to join us as a volunteer fixer at the 240 Share & Reuse Space. Your skills in fixing household items such as computers, electronics, small appliances, small furniture and more would benefit the community and help us reuse items and prolong their life as much as possible.

Are you into fixing bikes? We are looking for individuals who want to volunteer their time to fix bikes for St. James Town residents. You get the opportunity to learn while you fix bikes, to interact and engage with our community members.

Are you interested in volunteering with us to capture unique and exciting stories in the neighbourhood? We are looking for individuals who are interested in talking to community members and articulate their experiences and expectations at the 240 Share & Reuse Space and to promote the idea of ‘Community Share and Reuse’.

Are you an expert organiser? We have library of things where residents can borrow tools, kitchen, sports, camping equipment, toys & board games. We are in the process of organising the library and are looking for volunteers who are have experience organising a library or in inventory management.

We are looking for volunteers who can facilitate knitting workshops at The 240 Share & Reuse Space. You will be working alongside St. James Town Residents. You will be leading the program and monitoring the progress of participating residents, interacting & engaging with residents, coordinating with the Staff at St. James Town Community Corner to work on obtaining donations of yarn for the program.

As a part of our plan we are also looking for volunteers in our community who will be able to share their skills and experiences by facilitating workshops and sessions to help residents to build their skills. Please do reach out to us if you would like to volunteer with us.
