Looking back at the year with our youth

The pandemic had created an impact on students’ life and learning experience at school since March 2020. Four students living in St James Town shared their experiences on how the pandemic affected their summer break, return to school, holiday break, and relationship with family and friends.

How has the pandemic affected your life in regards to school? What was different for you?

  • We have to wear masks and we can’t play after school. We can’t work with our friends and a lot of work is online. I didn’t like online learning because I didn’t get the help from my teacher that I usually do in school. It wasn’t the same.

What is different for you?

  • I can’t have dinner or celebrate with my grandparents and aunts.

What are you most looking forward to in the New Year?

  • I am looking forward to Covid being gone so I can see my family and friends.

If any wish could be granted for you in the New Year, what would you wish for and why?

  • I wish my friends and family could be at my house to celebrate New Year’s together because I miss them.

How did you feel about the return to school? What was different for you?

  • It was difficult going online. I’m used to it now but I do hope to get back to in person learning. I feel I will learn more in class and I want to communicate with my peers – engage with people, face to face both in school and socially. I feel like I am on my own, not with people when I’m online learning. I can’t connect with people that way.

How did you feel during the initial lockdown period (March – May 2020)? What was different for you? What was a positive change? What was a negative change?

I was frightened at first. I was working and then there were not enough hours so I had to stay home. I joined a community program and then started volunteering. I visit seniors and cover reception at the Corner.

What are you most looking forward to in the New Year?

  • I’m hoping COVID is over and I can get back to normal.

If any wish could be granted for you in the New Year, what would you wish for and why?

  • I know so many people who have passed away from COVID. So my wish would be no more deaths.

How did you feel during the initial lockdown period (March – May 2020)? What was different for you? What was a positive change? What was a negative change?

  • I didn’t like that I was inside more than outside. I am used to being outside. I also didn’t like that I couldn’t see my friends and relatives. I usually play soccer with my friends at school and then Thursdays at the Community Center. That all stopped. The positive is that I got to spend more time with the family that I live with.

How has the pandemic affected your relationship with family and friends?

  • I use platforms like Viber and Skype to stay in touch with my elders from around the world. I use my phone to talk to friends.

What are you most looking forward to in the New Year?

  • COVID being over. The whole pandemic being over. I’m looking forward to the vaccine.

If any wish could be granted for you in the New Year, what would you wish for and why?

  • An end to the whole pandemic. I just want to get back to a regular life.
