Tax returns are pending but do not worry, the due date has been extended

It is tax season and also an important opportunity for families and individuals living on low incomes to access benefits available through provincial, territorial and federal governments and acquire credits. Since 2014, Health Access St. James Town has organised tax clinics at The Corner. Initially, the Sri Lankan Accountants Association of Canada was assisting and in 2017 another volunteer group joined this initiative to support and help conduct more clinics in the community. With this support we have been able to expand tax clinics for the community and were able to file more than 300 taxes each year.

This year, four tax clinics were organised with the support of the Sri Lankan Accountants Association of Canada and a volunteer group.  The first tax clinic was held on March 7th and we were able to complete about 70 tax returns.

Unfortunately, the other three tax clinics that were scheduled for March 28th and April 11th have been cancelled due to the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario. Tax filing season has been extended from April 30 to June 1, 2020. We are hoping to reorganize the tax clinics when circumstances allow.
